The Best Work Bag for Men: A 9-Point Test Before You Buy

So before you buy anything, ours included, run it through nine tests. They take ten minutes with a spec sheet and a tape measure, and they work on any bag.

What a work bag has to do: the 9 tests

# Test What to check
1 Laptop fit Sleeve dimensions against your laptop's, not the screen size
2 Laptop protection Padding on all sides, a strap or closure inside the sleeve
3 Daily kit A named place for charger, bottle, documents, pens
4 Empty weight Listed on the spec sheet, in pounds
5 Loaded shape Does it stay flat with everything in, or bulge
6 Materials What each material is doing, and where
7 Travel Trolley sleeve, fits under a seat
8 Carry options Handles plus a shoulder strap
9 Meeting test Does it stand up and look composed on a conference-room floor

If you are still deciding on the category itself, our guide to the types of bags men carry covers the ground, and there is a separate, honest comparison of backpack vs briefcase for work.

Laptop: sleeve size, padding, strap

"Fits a 15-inch laptop" is a marketing sentence. A laptop's screen size is measured diagonally; the bag cares about length, height and thickness. Find your laptop's real dimensions on the manufacturer's spec page and compare them with the sleeve's.

Then look for padding on both faces and the bottom, and a strap that holds the laptop in place so it doesn't slide when the bag is set down. A snug sleeve is a feature, not a fault, but you should know in advance that it is snug. We go through the measuring properly in our 16-inch laptop bag size guide.

The daily kit: charger, bottle, documents, pens

Lay out what you actually carry on a normal day. For most people it is some version of: laptop, charger and cable, phone, a water bottle, a folder or notebook, two pens, keys, maybe a tablet.

Now ask the bag where each one goes. Not "there's lots of room", but where. A bag with one big cavity holds everything and finds nothing. A good work bag gives the charger its own compartment so cables don't wrap the laptop, gives the bottle a holder so a leak isn't a disaster, and keeps documents flat in a sleeve of their own. If you want the method for setting this up, read how to organize a work bag.

Weight empty vs loaded

Every pound the bag weighs empty is a pound you carry before you've put anything in it. Check the listed weight. Then think about the loaded weight: a laptop and charger alone add several pounds, and a bag that is heavy to begin with becomes a chore by the second train.

Materials: what nylon and leather each do

Materials should be chosen for jobs, not for adjectives. Nylon twill is light, holds its shape when built with structure, and sheds rain. Full-grain leather takes wear well where hands touch the bag every day.

Be wary of vague material language. The FTC's Guides for Select Leather and Imitation Leather Products exist because "leather" gets stretched to cover things it shouldn't. A straight description tells you which parts are which. Ours, for the record: full-grain leather trim, handles and front pocket over a water-resistant nylon-twill body.

Travel: trolley sleeve, under-seat

If you fly for work even a few times a year, two features matter more than any others. A trolley sleeve, a panel on the back that slides over your suitcase handle, means the bag rides on the roller instead of your shoulder. And dimensions small enough to go under the seat in front mean it travels as your personal item. Measure, then check your airline's published limits.

Looks in a meeting

A work bag spends a surprising amount of its life on the floor next to a chair. A structured bag that stands upright on its own reads as composed; one that slumps reads as a gym bag that went to work. Color matters less than shape here, though if you're torn, our notes on choosing a briefcase color may help. In formal professions the bar is higher still; our post on briefcases for lawyers goes into that.

How the Alto scores on each test

It would be odd to write this and not apply it to our own bag. Here is the Alto Briefcase against the nine tests, from the product page.

A verified buyer put the daily-kit test better than we can: "This bag holds everything i need for work in a way that is perfectly organized." (I., verified buyer, Sep 18 2025)

Who it isn't for

The Alto is a slim briefcase, not a duffel. If your day includes a gym kit, a pair of shoes or a second laptop, it will be full before you are. One verified buyer found it "too small, resulting in a bloated look" (C., verified buyer, Dec 8 2023); another wrote that it "Would be perfect if it were like 10% larger." (M., verified buyer, Jun 21 2024). Both are fair. If that's your day, look at a larger bag. If you commute daily, read our guide to the commuter bag for men first.

Run the nine tests on whatever you're considering. The right bag is the one that passes yours.

FAQ

What size work bag do I need for a 16-inch laptop?
Measure the laptop, not the screen. A 16-inch laptop needs a padded sleeve a little longer and taller than the machine itself. The Alto's sleeve is 15.3 x 10.2 in and is made to hold a 16-inch MacBook Pro snugly; check your own model's dimensions before you buy any bag.
Is a briefcase or a backpack better for work?
Neither wins outright. A backpack is hands-free and reads casual; a briefcase stands upright, keeps the laptop and documents flat and looks at home in a meeting. A briefcase with a shoulder strap covers most of what people want a backpack for. Pick by what your week actually looks like.
How heavy should a work bag be empty?
As light as the job allows, because everything you carry sits on top of it. Check the empty weight on the spec sheet before you buy. The Alto weighs 3.3 lb empty, with a water-resistant nylon-twill body and full-grain leather trim, handles and front pocket.
Is a nylon work bag a step down from leather?
Not for daily carry. Nylon twill is lighter and sheds rain; leather earns its place where hands touch the bag. That is why the Alto uses full-grain leather on the handles, trim and front pocket over a water-resistant nylon-twill body, and says so plainly.
Can a work bag be a business expense?
That depends on your situation and the rules that apply to you. IRS Publication 463 covers travel and business expenses in general. Ask your accountant before you assume anything; we can't tell you whether a bag is deductible.
