Weekender Bag vs Carry-On Suitcase for a 2–4 Day Trip

That's where the weekender and the carry-on roller compete directly. Here's how to choose.

2–4 days: what you actually pack

Start with the list, not the bag. A typical three-day work trip looks something like this:

  • 2–3 shirts
  • 1 pair of trousers or chinos beyond what you're wearing
  • 1 knit or light jacket
  • Underwear and socks for each day
  • 1 extra pair of shoes
  • Sleepwear and something to exercise in, if you will
  • A toiletry bag
  • A laptop, charger and cables
  • Documents or a notebook

Folded flat, the clothes take less space than most people expect. The space hogs are shoes, a jacket, and anything bulky you add "just in case." If your list is mostly shirts and trousers, a weekender of around 30 to 35 liters usually holds it. If it includes a suit, two pairs of shoes and gym kit, a roller starts to make more sense.

Our longer guide to packing for a business trip goes item by item.

Soft vs hard

A hard-shell carry-on roller

  • Protects what's inside from crushing
  • Rolls easily over airport floors and smooth sidewalks
  • Holds its shape, which helps with suits
  • Is heavier empty, and awkward on stairs, cobbles, train steps and car trunks
  • Fits the overhead bin or nothing

A soft weekender

  • Is lighter in the hand and more forgiving when the bin is nearly full
  • Goes on a shoulder strap, so stairs and train platforms are easy
  • Packs into a car trunk or under a hotel desk without a fight
  • Gives less protection to fragile items
  • Puts the full weight on you when you aren't rolling it

The weight point deserves honesty, including about our own bag. Two verified buyers of the Kennedy mentioned it:

"What I wasn’t expecting is the weight. It’s a little heavier, more than 2kg when empty." — M., verified buyer, Aug 13 2020

"The only real disappointment is the weight - this bag is heavy and will be worse full." — L.W., verified buyer, Aug 11 2020

A structured weekender with leather trim and many pockets will never be as light as a bare nylon duffel. That's the trade for organization, and it's why a trolley sleeve matters.

Shoes and laptops

These two items decide most of the argument.

Shoes. In a roller, shoes go along the hinge side, in a bag. In a weekender, they can crush everything if they ride loose. A dedicated compartment fixes that. The Kennedy has a separate shoe compartment at one end; the product page calls it a waterproof shoe compartment. One buyer was clear about why that matters:

"It even has a separate compartment for your shoes, which personally, is my favorite thing about this bag." — R.C., verified buyer, Aug 13 2020

Laptops. A roller has no natural home for a laptop, so most people carry a second bag. A weekender with a padded laptop sleeve can be the only bag, which is simpler at the gate. The Kennedy has a tech compartment with a laptop sleeve that fits up to 16 inches. Keep in mind that at most US security lanes the laptop comes out, so it should be easy to reach.

If you do carry two bags, the trolley sleeve is the bridge: a weekender or briefcase slides over the roller's handle and rides on top. We explain how in What a Trolley Sleeve Does. One Kennedy owner put it simply:

"The bag has a lot of convenient compartments and being able to attach it to me rolling luggage spare me from having to carry it when it’s full." — J., verified buyer, Dec 8 2023

Carry-on size: dimensions, then check your airline

TSA doesn't set bag sizes. Airlines do, and they vary by carrier and sometimes by aircraft.

As published on October 15, 2026, Delta and JetBlue both list a carry-on maximum of 22 x 14 x 9 inches, including handles and wheels. Alaska Airlines publishes its own limit on its carry-on page.

Carry-on limit (Delta, JetBlue) Kennedy Weekender
Length 22 in 20.5 in
Height 14 in 11.8 in
Depth 9 in 8.3 in

On paper, the Kennedy sits inside those numbers. A soft bag that's overstuffed can bulge past them, so pack to the shape, and check your own airline before you fly. For the smaller bag under the seat, see Is a Briefcase a Personal Item?.

The Kennedy packing list

Here's how a three-day work trip goes into the Kennedy Weekender, which has 18+ pockets and compartments, 33 L of space, and a main compartment described as suitable for 2–4 days of travel. It's built with full-grain leather trim, handles, front pockets and shoulder strap over a water-resistant nylon-twill body.

Where What
Main compartment Shirts folded flat, trousers, knit, sleepwear, underwear and socks rolled into the gaps
Shoe compartment One pair of shoes
Tech compartment and laptop sleeve Laptop (up to 16 in), charger, cables
Front pockets Passport, phone, boarding pass, earbuds
Inside pockets Toiletry bag, documents
Trolley sleeve Rides on your roller, if you bring one

For toiletries, a structured kit keeps liquids away from shirts. Our Dopp Kit is full-grain leather and 1680D nylon and measures 5.5 x 5.5 x 10 in. The longer guide to dopp kits covers what to put in one.

If you're buying for someone else who travels for work, our gift guide for men who travel for work puts the Kennedy alongside smaller options.

The short answer

  • Choose a roller if you pack suits, fragile things, or more than four days, and mostly walk on smooth floors.
  • Choose a weekender if your trip is two to four days, involves stairs, trains or cars, and you want one bag with a place for the laptop and shoes.

FAQ

Is a weekender bag allowed as a carry-on?
Often, if its measurements fit your airline's carry-on limit. Delta and JetBlue publish 22 x 14 x 9 in including handles and wheels. The Kennedy measures 20.5 x 8.3 x 11.8 in. Limits vary by airline and aircraft, so check yours before you fly.
How many days can you pack in a weekender?
For most people, two to four days of clothes in a weekender of around 30 to 35 liters. The Kennedy holds 33 L and its main compartment is described as suitable for 2 to 4 days of travel. Shoes and bulky layers use space fastest.
Can a weekender ride on a rolling suitcase?
Yes, if it has a trolley sleeve: a panel on the back that slides over the suitcase's telescopic handle. The Kennedy has one, which helps when you are carrying a roller and a weekender together.
Where do shoes go in a weekender?
Ideally in their own compartment or bag, away from shirts. The Kennedy has a separate shoe compartment at one end. Otherwise use a cloth shoe bag and pack shoes at the bottom, soles facing the side wall.
Is a soft bag or a hard suitcase better for business trips?
A hard roller protects contents and rolls easily on smooth floors. A soft weekender is lighter in the hand, squeezes into tighter bins and is easier on stairs and in cars. For two to four days, many travelers find soft is enough.
