How to Clean a Nylon Bag With Leather Trim

A note on this guide: this is general care guidance for nylon-twill bags with smooth full-grain leather trim. It is not official Oak & Rove care instructions. Always spot-test first, and contact us before using any cleaner or conditioner on the leather.

Our Alto Briefcase and Kennedy Weekender are built this way: full-grain leather trim and handles over a water-resistant nylon-twill body. The Alto's front pocket is leather too. So this is how we'd approach either one.

Before you start: spot test

Every material and dye reacts a little differently. Before you clean anything you can see, test your method somewhere you can't.

  • For the nylon: a patch on the base or the back panel.
  • For the leather: the underside of a handle, or a strip of trim near the base.

Apply a small amount, let it dry completely, and look at it in daylight. If the color has shifted, the surface has gone patchy, or the leather has darkened and stayed dark, stop.

What you'll need:

  • A soft brush (a clean, soft clothes brush or a soft toothbrush for corners)
  • Two or three soft, lint-free cloths
  • Lukewarm water
  • A small amount of mild, unscented soap
  • A dry towel
  • Plain paper for stuffing

Nylon twill: brush, damp cloth, air-dry

Nylon twill is a woven fabric with a fine diagonal rib. It's tough and sheds light rain well, but dirt sits in the weave. The goal is to lift it out, not grind it in.

  1. Empty the bag completely. Open every pocket and shake out crumbs and grit.
  2. Dry brush first. Brush the whole body in the direction of the weave to lift dust. Much of the dirt comes off at this step.
  3. Damp cloth with mild soap. Dampen a cloth with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap, then wring it out until it's barely wet. Work on marks in small sections.
  4. Blot, don't rub. Pressing and lifting draws a stain out. Scrubbing spreads it and can roughen the surface.
  5. Rinse with a clean damp cloth. Go over the area again with plain water to remove soap.
  6. Keep the water off the leather. Work up to the trim, not over it.
  7. Air-dry. Leave the bag open at room temperature, away from radiators, heaters and direct sun.

For heavy rain rather than dirt, our post on water-resistant vs waterproof bags explains what the nylon does in a downpour and why the seams and zips matter.

Leather trim: wipe, dry away from heat

Smooth full-grain leather keeps the natural surface of the hide. It's durable, but water, heat and harsh chemicals mark it. Our earlier guide, What is full grain leather?, explains the material itself.

  1. Dust first. A dry soft cloth over the handles and trim.
  2. Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Plain water, wrung out until it's nearly dry. Wipe gently along the handle.
  3. Let it air-dry naturally. Never use a hair dryer or a heater to speed it up. Heat dries leather out and can make it stiff or crack.
  4. Conditioner, only if you choose to. If you want to condition the leather, spot-test the product first and follow its maker's directions. Use very little, and check with us first, as noted above.

Things to avoid on leather: soaking, bleach, alcohol-based wipes, household cleaners, solvents and anything abrasive.

If your bag has a removable leather key fob, like the Alto, treat it the same way as the handles.

Zippers

Zippers fail more often from grit than from use.

  • Brush the teeth with a dry soft brush to clear dust and sand.
  • Wipe the tape (the fabric either side of the teeth) with your damp cloth when you clean the nylon.
  • Keep the path clear. Cables, receipts and lining caught in a zip are the most common cause of a jam. Close zips slowly when a pocket is full.
  • Don't force a stuck zip. Back it off, check for anything caught, and try again gently.

Storage

How a bag is stored decides how it looks next year.

  • Empty it. Pens leak, and bottles drip.
  • Stuff it loosely with plain paper so it keeps its shape. Avoid printed newspaper, which can transfer ink.
  • Use a breathable dust bag or a cotton pillowcase. Avoid sealed plastic, which traps moisture.
  • Keep it out of direct sun, which fades both nylon and leather.
  • Store it upright or flat, not hanging by the handles for months.

A quick weekly reset helps too. Our guide on how to organize a work bag includes a Sunday-night routine that doubles as a check for crumbs, loose pens and anything that might mark the lining.

A quick reference

Part Do Don't
Nylon-twill body Dry brush, then a barely damp cloth with mild soap; blot Machine wash, soak, bleach, scrub hard
Leather trim and handles Dust, wipe with a barely damp cloth, air-dry Heat-dry, solvents, alcohol wipes, soaking
Zippers Brush the teeth, keep the path clear Force a stuck zip
After rain Empty, open, blot, stuff with paper, air-dry Radiator, hair dryer, direct sun
Storage Paper stuffing, breathable bag, out of sun Sealed plastic, hanging by handles

When to contact support

If something isn't working as it should, a zip that won't run, a seam coming loose, a stain you can't shift, contact us. Tell us which bag you have and send a photo. It's better to ask before you try a fix that might make it worse.

One last word on language. When we describe these bags, we say "full-grain leather trim" and name the nylon-twill body, because that is what the bag is made of. The FTC's guides for leather products exist to keep that kind of description accurate, and it's also the practical reason the two materials need different care.

FAQ

Can I put a nylon bag with leather trim in the washing machine?
No. Machine washing soaks the leather, can distort padding and structure, and may damage zips and hardware. Clean the nylon by hand with a soft brush and a damp cloth, treat the leather separately, and let the bag air-dry.
What should I use to clean the nylon part of my bag?
Start with a dry soft brush to lift dust. Then use a cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, blotting rather than scrubbing. Test in a hidden spot first and keep water off the leather trim.
How do I clean the leather handles?
Wipe them with a soft cloth that is barely damp, then let them air-dry naturally. Avoid soaking them, and keep them away from direct heat. If you want to use a leather conditioner, spot-test it first and follow its maker's directions.
How do I dry a bag after heavy rain?
Empty it, open the zips, blot the outside with a dry towel, and stuff it loosely with paper to hold its shape. Let it dry at room temperature, away from radiators, heaters, hair dryers and direct sun.
What should I avoid when cleaning a nylon bag with leather trim?
Bleach, harsh solvents, household cleaners not made for leather, abrasive pads, soaking, machine washing and drying with heat. Any of these can mark the nylon, dry out or stain the leather, or damage zips.
